To Zwift or not to Zwift…

Is it really even a question?

So it’s March. And there’s heaps of snow on the ground. And salt. And wind so cold it hurts.

Admittedly, I (Rebecca) am not hardcore. I’m no Rob Warrenfeltz, Jen Gontero, or Ryan Musial (this dude rides with icicles in his beard, laughing all the way). I don’t like the cold, and I know lots of you are with me on this.

So there’s Zwift, a computer-generated cycling utopia free of the freeze and dangerous drivers who text. For those who aren’t familiar, Zwift is an app that, paired with a smart trainer, takes your solitary indoor ride, puts it on a virtual course (choose from London and Watopia, described as South Pacific Paradise), and pits you against other real riders in real time. Approaching a hill? Get ready. Zwift talks to your smart trainer and tells it to up the resistance. Your climbing legs will be challenged. So will your sprinting legs. There are segments in each ride where you can work to earn jerseys against other riders on the course. Riders, by the way, from over 150 countries around the world.

Sure beats frostbite.

And a salty bike.

And spinning away in solitude, in your basement, with only your mind to compete against.

So, yeah, I’m down with this Zwift thing. For me, it not only beats the weather, it also allows me to see how fast I can really go. Because I’m a timid rider. I’m the one who pulls the break levers on super steep downhills and unclips at every stop sign. I like this ability to ride without limitations. So, no, Zwift is NOT just for the elite. But for you guys who are looking to upgrade to Cat 1 or 2 this season, Zwift can deliver for you, too, in spades. It allows you to pick specific workouts to increase speed and climbing ability. There’s something for every rider.

My only concern? That when the sun shines and the weather warms we all get back on the road. Because nothing beats fresh air, real roads, and Lancaster County views that challenge even those of Watopia.

Think this Zwift thing might be for you? Come talk to us. Many of our customers (friends!) are hooked. Mention this blog, and we’ll give you 15% off a smart trainer. A Zwift membership runs at $10 a month, after a free trial.
